New toys

After a mishap with my first GoPro a few years ago (it sunk in Lake Tahoe), I never bothered to buy another. Recently, I was given one of the newer versions, the Hero3. They're fun little cameras. Though I find the optics kind of clunky, they can be put anywhere. I took it free diving on Tahoe's South Shore this week, and I tried to put it in a catfish's mouth. That didn't work very well.

Time out in the Sierra

Every summer I try to spend at least a few days at a secret spot in the Sierra Nevada. It's pretty far out there and takes a day of hiking to reach. But with clear water, warm air, plenty of trout and several nice camping spots, I have a hard time leaving.

Hammocks are the new tent

Silver-Hammock.jpg

I've been camping in hammocks for the last few years. In nice weather, I've come to prefer it over my tent. A recent trip into Lake Tahoe's Desolation Wilderness gave me the idea to write about the subject. Outside just published the piece titled, Pitch This: Alternatives to the Tent. Check it out!

Race the Lake of the Sky

I had an amazing time shooting at one of South Lake Tahoe's most singular events, Race the Lake of the Sky. The annual weekend-long standup paddle party is put on by my friends over at South Tahoe Standup Paddle. The competition includes a 5-mile race, a 14-mile race and the always-entertaining SUP Cross, SUP High Jump and the Sweet Moves Contest. Above 404 rider Danny Ching leads the pack in the El Dorado 5-miler Saturday.

Happy International Surfing Day!

Here's to the original surfers! But also the folks over at Surfrider have a great list of events and happenings going on this ISD. Hope everyone has fun today!

Hiding out in Desolation Wilderness

Every summer, I try to spend as much time as I can hiking and camping in Desolation Wilderness. The snow doesn't melt out until June or so, so it's kind of a short sun season up there. Usually, it's just a matter of weeks that the many small lakes are bearable for swimmers. If you like cold water, you might get a few extra days in.

My new beat

Somehow, I've been relegated to covering coffee on a near-regular basis for Outside. While this isn't what I would've envisioned for myself 10 years ago, it does make sense— in a way. I love coffee. I drink it every morning. After my latest story, I now know more about it than I ever expected to.
